Dear All,
One giant leap for Kendra... our first dialogue with a big name in the
music industry.
1. Real World exploratory discussions begin
2. Thanks to the Kendra Outreach Team
3. Tim Berners-Lee (W3C) and Rob Glaser (RealNetworks) on interoperability
1. REAL WORLD EXPLORATORY DISCUSSIONS BEGIN
On Monday 6th June we had a top level meeting with Real World (
http://realworld.on.net ) in Bath, UK. Real World is an interesting group:
there's the record label, studios, multimedia production, global WOMAD
festivals and much more. We had a real good chat with their top people. We
explored synergy between Kendra and MUDDA (Magnificent Union of Digitally
Downloading Artists http://www.mudda.org ). And chatted about the state of
the music and media industries. The meeting ended with us all saying that
we should have more chin wags. So that's nice.
This is a big opportunity for Kendra Initiative. There is much potential
benefit to both organisations here. As indeed there is benefit to all in
the music industry from what Kendra has to offer - an open global digital
media marketplace. I look forward to the continuing discussions with Real
World.
Please note that Real World, and any associated projects or people, is not
endorsing or supporting Kendra Initiative in any way. All we are doing is
having exploratory discussions at this stage.
2. THANKS TO THE KENDRA OUTREACH TEAM
A big thank you for all the efforts of the Kendra Outreach Team for putting
the Real World meeting together. As you know it is that team's mission to
go out into the big wide world and strike up dialogue with big names across
the industry. If you have access to the ear of big names then why not see
if Kendra piques their interest? You never know, they may thank you for the
introduction.
We aim to bring you more big names soon (
http://www.kendra.org.uk/wiki/wiki.pl?Celebrities ). If you want to be part
of the Kendra Outreach Team (participating in the continuing Real World
dialogues and initiating other big name dialogues) then join the Kendra
Framework email discussion list and make your introduction.
3. TIM BERNERS-LEE (W3C) AND ROB GLASER (REALNETWORKS) ON INTEROPERABILITY
In May I found myself in Japan attending W3C's 14th annual conference.
There was much talk about the semantic web and how it will join all our
disparate information resources and services together. I can't wait. I made
loads of great contacts for Kendra. There was much interest and support
with what we are doing with Kendra Base - our collaborative design tool.
Some interesting snippets on interoperability: Tim Berners-Lee (W3C's
founder) called for the "Independence of the communication from the
provider of software" i.e. de-coupling content from the application. Rob
Glaser (CEO of RealNetworks), in his keynote speech, called for open source
DRM. The idea behind this is to have interoperable DRM - no matter which
vendor your content comes from, it will play on the media device of your
choice. Great stuff. You can see a little more here:

More news soon (of course)...
Cheers Daniel
