Dear All,
Happy new year and welcome to Kendra Initiative's first newsletter for 2004
(assuming you're using a Gregorian calendar ;-) This is a very exciting
year for our project. We'll be releasing our first software prototype,
spreading the word at more conferences and having more gatherings around
the globe. Generally, content industry players seem at last to be taking on
board Kendra values. The time is right. So, buckle in and hold tight...
1. Developers meeting, central London, Wednesday 21st January 2004
2. Software development and free/open licensing issues comment request
3. Content Reference Forum deserves our applause
4. MILIA 2004 - World Interactive Content Forum ? 19% discount
1. Developers meeting, central London, Wednesday 21st January 2004
With the release of KendraBase, our first software prototype, drawing ever
nearer it's time we had a developer's gathering. The day is set for
Wednesday 21st January 2004. The times are 4pm to 8pm. The location is
central London. Exact details will be posted within a week's time here:
http://www.kendra.org.uk/wiki/wiki.pl?KendraMeeting20040121
Where you'll also find the agenda. We will mainly be discussing software
development and free/open licensing issues - see item 2. And, if we're
lucky, Neil Harris will give us a sneak preview of KendraBase.
As you may have guessed I'm still hunting for a location so if you have any
good ideas for a room to fit 20 people in central London then let me know.
Also, reply to this email if you're going to attend so I've got an idea of
numbers.
If you can't make this meeting then don't panic. I plan to hold frequent
meetings throughout the year.
2. Software development and free/open licensing issues comment request
If you are a software developer or you have a legal head on you then put
your oar in. All software created by Kendra Initiative will be given away
at no cost. We will also be supplying source code for all software. Ever
since we started this project we have been debating exactly how to do this.
To give a taster we are currently looking at licensing under GPL and BSD
and any other license with a recursive disclaimer clause.
You can join in the discussion in a number of ways:
- Attend the developers meeting.
- Comment on the wiki page here:
http://www.kendra.org.uk/wiki/wiki.pl?KendraBaseLicense
- Comment on kDev mailing list. See archived thread starting here:
http://www.kendra.org.uk/lists/archive/k-developers/msg00199.html
You can post ideas to kDev ( k-developers@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ) without
having to join as long as you send using your email address at the bottom
of this newsletter.
3. Content Reference Forum deserves our applause
At last big companies are looking at the "lack of interoperability between
digital content technologies". The CRF, "a recently formed standards group
of leading technology and content-related companies", has taken Kendra's
mission to heart and deserves our applause. Well done. You'll find out more
about CRF here:
http://www.crforum.org
4. MILIA 2004 - World Interactive Content Forum ? 19% discount
Register before February 23rd, 2004 for the promotional offer and you'll

Cheers Daniel
