[kNews] Kendra Foundation: Formed and Funded...

Dear All,

Well, I finally pulled out my finger. And out popped Kendra Foundation.
It's gonna be a fun year. Feel free to tell your colleagues and loved
ones...

1. Kendra Foundation incorporated
2. Daniel Harris donates 5,000 GBP to Kendra Foundation
3. Joe Pietroni to join Kendra Foundation as Senior Technical Manager
4. Daniel Harris to loan over 30,000 GBP to Kendra Foundation
5. Astream on trial for content distribution
6. Enterprise Content Management Online endorsed
7. 2nd SMS Meets TV endorsed

1. Kendra Foundation incorporated

Thanks to everyone who helped with the incorporation of Kendra Foundation
(company number: 4643358) formed today! It is a non-profit company limited
by guarantee - there are no shares. Kendra Foundation will enable me to
continue my work with Kendra Initiative, supporting, nurturing and
promoting, but now I'll be able to employ people to assist me; get in
funding; pay myself a wage (that would be nice) and build the project from
a solid legal foundation. And, of course, build the collaborative design
tools that we all need.

It all adds a layer of confidence and structure for myself, for others in
the project and hopefully yourself. In the coming weeks I'll post more
details of what I want to do with Kendra Foundation on the Kendra Lists
(mostly on kDev):

2. Daniel Harris donates 5,000 GBP to Kendra Foundation

In order to pay for the company registration and start things off I've
donated 5,000 GBP to Kendra Foundation. You'll find a summary of financial
accounts here:

3. Joe Pietroni to join Kendra Foundation as Senior Technical Manager

Joe will be coming to Kendra Foundation in March - hot from Celador where
he is responsible for heading up the team that created the Who Wants To Be
A Millionaire? Internet Games and deployed them in different countries in
different languages. Joe's background is in programming Internet/database
applications and technical project management.

4. Daniel Harris to loan over 30,000 GBP to Kendra Foundation

In order to fund Joe's first 8 months salary I will loan at least 30,000
GBP to Kendra Foundation. This is a substantial personal commitment on my
part. I have no doubts that I will get it all back. I fully expect
governments, corporations, organisations and individuals to be falling over
themselves to fund Kendra Foundation and Kendra Participant Projects.

After briefly looking at funding options, I reckoned that my time was best
spent on actually doing the project rather than trying to navigate my way
through the funding labyrinth. My thinking is if we produce something
that's of benefit to the planet then we're bound to get funding. And if we
produce something that's no good then we don't deserve funding anyway. So
fine.

5. Astream on trial for content distribution

Yes, those cunning streamers, Astream, have done it again. From seemingly
nowhere, they've weaved their way up the through the competition to take
first place, neck and neck with Loudeye. Oh, the tension! The Kendra
Network Trial now has 30 servers around the globe hosting 149 test stream
files. Who will be next? Perhaps one of these:

7. 2nd SMS Meets TV endorsed

In Van's own words...

2nd SMS Meets TV
Endorsement - 100 EUR discount for Kendra Participants
06/02/2003 - Dom Pedro Hotel, Lisbon, Portugal - Van Dusseldorp & Partners

The seminar will build on the proceedings of the recent Amsterdam based SMS
Meets TV event and provide a more in-depth examination of this exciting
marketplace. Exactly how are broadcasters, mobile operators and SMS
application developers working together to develop new content formats and
generate revenue from SMS users? How will the SMS entertainment market
evolve to incoporate MMS, downloadable games and the potential offered via
mobile based marketing? SMS TV is becoming more than voting, games and
chat: in what directions are the more dynamic concept developers heading?
What progress has been made in addressing key industry issues including:
interoperability of services across Europe, premium rate billing and
revenue sharing arrangements?
