Convergence: show us the money
------------------------------

A few people have said to me: why not just let "market forces" bring about
convergence and stop worrying about trying to build a system? Haven't you
got anything better to do? But, I say, aren't we all just part of "market
forces" anyway? Is there a them and an us? Aren't we all together? And, no,
I haven't got anything better to do, actually.

Just thinking about it, why haven't these mystical "market forces" made
convergence happen by now anyway? Why haven't companies just produced
convergence on a plate? We know there's a demand. And then, I thought, has
anyone actually shown that we can make money from convergence?

Let's get real here, shall we? Where's the business case for convergence?
Has anyone proved that it's good for business profits? Could it be that's
why there is so much resistance to convergence?

A few people have said to me: some companies think that various aspects of
convergence may reduce their overall market share? That may be the case?
But wont the market as a whole be increasing? So, wont overall revenue be
increased in any given market?...

I've been prompted to this train of thought by our up and coming Kendra
meeting and my up and coming panel at Streaming Media. You can see my posts

Digital Rights Management endorsed by Kendra Initiative
-------------------------------------------------------

In their own words...
With the increasing use of the Internet to buy, sell, or send music,
video, documents, software, images, and other copyrighted content, comes
the need to protect that content from unauthorised use. At the same
time, tracking information use is becoming a more important part of the
content distribution process. Van Dusseldorp & Partners is hosting a
one-day seminar on the topic of digital rights management. The seminar
will examine digital asset management models, services, standards and
rules, as well as case studies on DRM systems for audiovisual content.
With Digital Island, DMDsecure, RealNetworks, MPAA, Microsoft, Irdeto
access and many others.
The event takes place at:
Artis Conference Centre, Amsterdam
20/11/2001
There's a 200 EUR discount for Kendra Participants! Go get your discount
