Re: [kNT] High Definition video content on the network trial...

Hi there All,

A little birdy tells me that we will soon have our High Definition video content ready to roll. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks, in fact.

The idea - pretty much identical to the current Network Trial - is that you will mirror the HD content on your own servers. You will be offering the content as a download rather than a stream - due to large bandwidths needed for real time streaming HD video. Hence, you will not need a streaming server to participate in this part of the Network Trial - so a public HTTP or FTP site will do just fine.

May I suggest that you familiarise yourself with the current Network Trial and, if you have a streaming server, go through the procedure of mirroring the current (low definition) video.

You'll find everything you need to know about the Network Trial here:
http://www.kendra.org.uk/network.php

Once we have a number of the core group here mirroring the HD content I'll announce to the main Kendra list for more ISPs, SSPs (Streaming Service Providers) and CDNs to participate - and also request everyone outreaching to ISPAs and exchanges around the world to get their members to participate too. As we proceed we'll issue a more formal press release and it would be great if you talk about it in your own newsletters, on your website and issue your own press releases - in order to get massive coverage.

HD is a hot topic right now. There's lots of noise surrounding the next generation HD-DVD and Blu-ray format battle. Steve Jobs (president of Apple), with Kunitake Ando (president of Sony) standing next to him on stage, said "2005 is going to be the year of high-definition video." And I'm informed that there are a number of HD broadcast channels going live later this year. As ever broadband is getting faster - there will be a point very soon when real time HD streaming is possible. However, due to current contention ratios there still needs to be local caching/mirroring of content - what the trial is all about. And with students using Internet2 for unauthorised file exchange. There has never been a greater need for an open marketplace and distribution platform for digital media (that we have described as Kendra System) - in fact the need gets greater every day.

Look forward to any comments, suggestions, questions, problems to this list...

Onward and upward! ;-)

Cheers Daniel
