Good thoughts
on convergence.
One thing you neglect is where it all comes together which is the user interface. After all any of us will be users of convergence solutions and we want and need a manageable (open and attractive) user interface We have a prototype solution for the elements that you address Its built around an end-to-end model of how users interact with information(entertainment/communication etc.) Most of it is open-source software so its not a matter of having to pay for it. The issue is "Is it possible to get people in different industries working together on an open-source framework? So to make practical progress the other essential element is the human-content-computer-network interface. Sounds a mouthful I know but this is what makes convergence (and originators getting paid for it) a practical possibility. We have spent the last three years researching all the things you mention and have come up with a "Candidate Reference Framework" that allows the things you mention to happen in such a way that the user has a useful, intuitive and relevant interactive experience. Basically we went back to the drawing board, asked what modern computers and networks can support, looked at the requirements of convergence (of content, computers and networks) and came up with some innovative ways of solving the problems. There seems to be some interest in this Reference Framework. Maybe if there is interest in the meeting after this next one we can present and demonstrate the framework. I look forward to an interesting meeting. Gordon Ross www.infocube.net also
