[kFW] "Convergence & Interoperability"

John McHugh Content Director of Qmediastream.com

"Convergence & Interoperability" unfortunalty are not products so defy
marketing strategies. This being the case I think we need to look back into
history and remind ourselves of other similar conflicts and learn from them.
	Eight track vs. cassette
	Betacam vs. VHS
	CD vs. Minidisk
	Even MPEG* vs. MPEG*
These are all easy to promote because they have a marketability. When
considering the derailment of the two aforementioned, the utmost importance
of market leaders needs careful consideration. I believe that all the
various different media types, players and devices can work together but
only when the marketing departments have written the strap line. Hate to be
cynical but that's where this discussion needs to start.

Generating the scalable model for content will be driven down two paths
	(a) the subscription "as much as you can eat for a Euro / Dollar a week"
	(b) micro payments made through one of your service or utility bills

If anyone would like to read a little more into the evolution of how this
model arrives you might do well to read this (free downloadable) book,
"Battle of he Portals" http://www.theecademy.com/bop.shtml when written
three years ago it was probably like saying "Real, Windows & Quick Time will
never play on the same device", the book describes, in 1998 how by 2001
there would only be a handful of successful portals and everybody said "he
must be on something"!
Then I would suggest his latest,
http://www.theecademy.com/ecosystem.html hope I'm not boring too many of the
K org with business but unless it's factored in and can scale in some way,
it's all just self indulgence, isn't it?
