Re: [kEv] Summit: The agenda...

This is what I just sent to an high ranking R&D man at a large mobile company in answer to his asking for a clearer understanding of what we mean to achieve and also clarify if it is a conference or a workshop...

----

The overall drive of the Summit is to foster enhancements to content discovery and hence facilitate the driving of revenues to content owners and service providers in the content value chain. The aim is to foster cross-fertilisation of ideas across media industry sectors.

Content owners are not a happy bunch and there is a big opportunity to provide solutions to assist their businesses. The lack of widely used standards within industry sectors means content providers find it prohibitive to repurpose their digital media and catalogue metadata for each one of the distribution platforms - because many of these use their own proprietary formats for data input. This reduces potential revenue to content owners and service providers alike.

As a large communications service provider it is in your interests to better understand the challenges that content providers face to get their products on all the distribution platforms. Enabling consumers to easily browse, search and purchase content is only one half of the equation. The other being the ease with which the content owner can make their product available.

While there are barriers for consumers to get the content they want in the format they want and there are barriers to content owners to publish their content then consumers will drift towards systems that provide them with the convenience of global catalogue access. Unfortunately, in many respects, file sharing still offers a superior "shopping" experience. However, both content owners and service providers loose out on the revenue opportunity, there being no commerce channel.

The Summit day will oscillate between plenary sessions and group work. At each stage gathering, distilling and refining ideas. Specific lines of investigation will evolve throughout the day, co- driven by the concerns of the participants, within a framework of innovating the content marketplace. The questions (in the invite below) provide a starting point for discussions. For instance, are we building the right tools? Many record labels in our membership don't think so.

He then rang me and wants to be kept informed but can't make a decision without a clear participants list and a more defined structure.

We go on...

Neil suggested we move from group work to plenary sessions throughout the day. At each stage distilling and refining ideas. It's much more like a high level workshop where everyone is involved, sharing and learning.

A number of people will get 5-10 minute slots to put their points over. We could have up to 30 of these in a few hours to really get the ideas flowing. No one will be expected to deliver a keynote. I think it will be a fun and challenging day.

Please continue with the suggestion for the day's structure and we'll put them on the wiki:
