Re: [kDev] some quick questions on the tools plan.
Hi Mark and All,

We do need some sort of repository, whether its Sourceforge or our own
CVS.
Yes, we do. In fact, what we need is kendraTools! ;-) Or perhaps a Wiki
just to collect our thoughts. Or perhaps we need to meet. Either way
we've got to figure out the basics. It would be really cool for you and
Dave to comment on how what you're talking about relates to this idea
of a generalised data repository and input/output templates.
The way I'm thinking is every piece of data is an object. Look again at
the small demo I hacked together. What's wrong with it?
Tools:
Profile:
LDAP sounds like a good fit, being able to define organisations and
members of those organisations.
What about defining:
Organisations as subsidiaries of other organisations?
People as fathers of other people?
The ownership of this song is 20% the singer, 50% the drummer and 30%
the bassist?
People working for multiple companies on different days of the week?
People as administrators for this media server?
Media servers holding these files?
These files of this duration in this format?
On and on and on for things we haven't even thought about yet...
Will all these fit into LDAP?
Question, these profiles and later user accounts are they envisaged
just for the development project, or are they also customer and
content suppliers (which of course could be both).
We need to cobble the development environment together for us to create
kendraTools. I've not been specifying what needs to happen in the
development project because I'm not the one who's going to be doing the
hardcore coding.
But the point here about profiles is I have only one login to all the
functions/interfaces that the Kendra project provides. You have one
login too. And so does Mr Just A Consumer. But we can all have access
to different areas within the project depending on our respective
permissions/privileges and what we're previously said we're interested
in, etc.
The email address mentioned later, again if this is just for the
system development then not too many problems, but as the potential
pool of users increases, we have more name space conflicts.
Can you explain this in a different way - I don't understand it fully.
But, yes, more people means more duplicated objects but these are not
"conflicts" these are just people using the same words but for a
(perhaps) different meaning. We wont know unless they explicitly link
their words to words of other people. Meaning "when I say tree I mean
the same kind of tree that John means".
Really important: We are not trying to define a singular global truth.
We are providing a platform to enable people to link up various parts
of their own truths to each other. Therefor, "conflicts" don't happen
on planet Kendra.
Forum:
Must be web based initially.
Funding:
What would be useful would be some application that could put the two
together, those seeking and those with. To start with though a simple
contacts page with details of requirements for funding etc. (very much
an administration effort, pulling in the contact details for Nesta,
arts council, local business development funds etc. what they
can/could fund, what they wont, get links to forms etc.)
Look at the work done by SimulacraMedia for firstStageCapital
(www.firststagecapital.com)
Exactly, that's what I mean. Encourage people to fund their own Kendra
related projects.
Accounts:
Is this an individuals account in the system? for user or content
supplier? Need to build up a much richer function req. for this.
Sorry, financial accounts tis what I mean. I didn't make it clear.
Events & meetings:
Tie together LDAP and vCal systems, then also link to reports on
meetings (Moveable Type Trackback built in, allowing people to 'blog'
a meeting and make sure everyone knows about it. This means that we
can use the 'blog' to minute and supply v. good reportage on a meet,
even if it isn't a blog in the usual sense.
Yes, reports on meetings. Yes.
Development:
Can we get space on a server? Is Sourceforge a good enough tool (I
have not used SF extensively online, though we did use it internally
at Accenture). What other tools do we need access to on the
development server (Wiki, list management, perl, PHP)?
All this stuff is gettable. I'm funding this so anything is possible.
Currently Kendra is running on some personal space I've got on DSVR. I
will shell out for server/space if it's critical (public facing).
Otherwise we'll take up previous offers of free space if it's just for
development.

Cool! Hi-resolution spy satellite co-ordinates! ;-)
